Don’t be scared by the long list of ingredients. Most likely, you have all of the seasonings in your pantry, so the fresh ingredients are only the wrappers, egg, ground pork, jicama, green onions, chinese sausage and mushrooms. And if you are like me, you might already even have dried mushrooms and chinese sausage in your pantry and freezer too!
These frozen won tons have been life savers for me on multiple occasions. Once my freezer stash is low, I set aside 1 to 1.5 hours during the weekend to make another batch.
Give yourself a weeknight break from cooking by making your own freezer stash of these-- cuz you deserve a break!
Yields approximately 80 won tons (about 8 servings)
Ingredients:
- 1 package of thin won ton wrappers (about 80 won ton wraps per package)
- 1 lb ground pork
- 2 t salt
- ½ t black pepper
- ½ t sesame oil
- ½ t ground ginger
- 1 T soy sauce
- ½ t sugar
- 3 T cornstarch
- 1 egg
- 1/3 c water
- 1 c chopped jicama
- 3 stalks of green onions chopped (about ¾ c when chopped)
- 8 dried shitake mushrooms reconstituted and chopped (about ½ c when chopped)
- 2 chinese sausages (lop chueng) chopped
Procedures:
- In a large bowl combine all ingredients, except the won ton wraps, and mix thoroughly. This is the filling.
- Put a small spoonful of the filling in the center of a won ton wrapper. Fold the wrapper in half to form a triangle. Tuck the other 2 edges in and squeeze slightly. (See photo) Repeat until all the filling is used up.
- Place won tons on a freezer safe tray in a single layer and freeze for 2 hours.
- When frozen, transfer them to a labeled gallon ziplock bag and store in the freezer until ready to use.
- When you are ready to eat, bring a pot of water to boil. Add how many ever frozen won tons you would like to eat into the boiling water. (I’d say an average person eats a plate of about 9-10 won tons a sitting.) There is no need to defrost won tons before boiling. Once the won tons are in the water, bring the water back up to a boil under high heat and then lower heat to a simmer. Give the won tons a quick but gentle stir. Simmer for about 6-8 min. They should float to the top when done. Serve hot on a plate with a drizzle of soy sauce, sesame oil and black pepper.
